New Fave - Shu Uemura Painting Liner

I’ve had a bundle of new products to try, so stay tuned for lots of reviews, but a true stand-out that I’ve had the most fun playing with is Shu Uemura’s Painting Liner. These tiny little pots look more intimidating that your average pencil, but are actually much easier to apply than a liquid liner and are smudge-proof, waterproof and glide over the lids effortlessly so there’s no need to pull that delicate skin around the eye (ahem, wrinkle control).

I used a cheap liner brush that worked perfectly and have yet to go through all nine shades - mainly because I love the gold so much. The brown and black are great for everyday use. (I'd skip the night blue, only because there's not much difference between that and the black.) The white is more like a shimmery silver that instantly gives you that awake look, while the purple is a beautiful subtle violet. You can also apply a small amount to the base of a lid for long lasting shadow.

Age Old Beauty Tricks?

I had the pleasure of learning a slew of hand-me-down beauty tricks that have been used for generations in my family. I'm not sure if half of them actually work, but the women in my family swear by most of what are inexpensive drugstore wonders.

Cold cream can be used for anything from body lotion and eye makeup remover, to a nightly moisturizer. The women in my family have surely kept Ponds in business.

Toothpaste is the cure to removing a zit. Dab it on at night and it will be gone in the morning.

Gargling with hydrogen peroxide whitens the teeth.

My mother brushes egg white on her face before any major event (especially one that involves a professional photographer) to "tighten" herself up.

Vaseline is for nightly under-eye wrinkle treatment, lip balm, a DIY lipstick (simply mix your blush with it), to soften your feet and most important for your teeth. A thin layer of Vaseline will make your teeth extra-shiny in pictures and prevent lipstick from getting on that toothy grin.

Latisse for your lashes

I'm willing to go to any length for long lashes. I recently acquired a prescription from my dermatologist for the new wonder-lash treatment, Latisse. You may have seen Brooke Shields pimping the product and she'll tell you that after only 6 weeks of use and slightly pesky side effects, such as darkening of the lid or retina, this miracle gel (that was originally used to treat glaucoma patients) will dramatically thicken and lengthen your lashes. Sign me up! I've been using Latisse for about two weeks and am convinced that my thin (yet long-ish) lashes are thickening already. I'll be updating with a full report in about a month.

Bronzer How-To

A great tip that I read from founder, Maureen Kelly, of the cosmetic brand Tarte is that when applying bronzer, to use a large fluffy brush and make the number 3 over your face. I do this starting at the top of my forehead and repeat it a couple of times. (Not much more because bronzer can be easily overdone if you’re not careful.) This is a foolproof way to apply only where it’s needed (which is not all over the face). My new bronzer that I’m loving and using on a daily basis is the Chanel Soleil Tan De Soleil Limited Edition 4 Facettes Bronzing Powder. It’s great that you have control over the color with the 4 gradual shades of bronzing powder included in the set and they can actually be doubled-up for eye shadow, as well.
This bronzer looks great worn alone and gives the skin a beautiful glow-y look with a flawless finish that Chanel powder always manages to achieve. My easy summer face will consists of this bronzer, a dab of concealer, a punchy blush, and my waterproof mascara. Voila!

I love my skinny jeans, but I bought this fabulous pair when the trouser pant first became all the rage. These 7 for all mankind Ginger Pant in Light Weight Mercer is actually a darker denim that is perfect for year-round wear thanks to the airy fabric and are perfect for a casual office. The best part is that they look incredible on everyone. The higher-waist is very slimming and I own two different pairs (as does my equally obsessed co-worker), including the black double knit that's better suited for cold weather months. 7 is also great about returns - if you happen to get a tear or holes, send those babies back a year or two down the road.

Style Tip - Spoon Me

One on my must-have beauty products is an eyelash curler. My lashes stick straight down if I don't use one. Ever find yourself without this fabulous tool? Use a spoon! I learned this while on a city bus in Mexico from a local woman. Just postition your lashes around it and hold a bit longer than you would with your curler and press your fingers against the spoon. Voila! I've used this in a pinch and although it's not my Shu Uemura, it certainly gets the job done.

Designer Spotlight - Jenny Han

One of my favorite designers ever is Jenny Han. Her clothing is fun, flirty and beautifully made. A few of my favorite blouses are from Jenny and bought at my hometown boutique, Staxx. (Stop in if you're visiting the lovely town of Springfield, Mo - this is my favorite place to shop!)

I love her dress above that Nicky Hilton is wearing and there's an assortment of fabulous maxi dresses that I'm coveting in her Spring 09 collection, as well.

I receive a ton of catalogs (Anthropologie, Bloomies, J.Crew, Urban...) with inspiring outfits and items that I might eventually buy. I also subscribe to a slew of magazines with looks that I love. All of this paper can pile up and eventually the "someday" ideas are thrown into the recycle bin.

I've recently discovered that the inside of my closet door can now become a new wall of inspiration and can often help to build my daily outfit. I tear out the pages that I love in magazines and catalogs (with the occasional note, such as "wear a blouse like this with my white BCBG pants") and tape it neatly to the inside of my closet door. I see these when I open it to get dressed each morning. It's been affectionately dubbed as "my locker" and is slightly more mature than my old Tiger Beat photos.

How Not To Look Old

I found this book on my desk and wondered if were a subtle hint considering I’ll be turning 30 this year. I’ll admit that I snickered when I saw the author (although accomplished beauty editor) who appeared to be more of a box blond cougar than a grow-old-gracefully stylista that I hope appear when approaching my 40's and 50’s.

After flipping through the first few pages, I ended up reading the entire book. Ol’ Charla de Cougar actually gave some decent tips on “How Not To Look Old” and without further adieu...I’ll leave you with the most noteworthy:

* Cut Bangs – side swept or longer choppy are best. Kathy Lee Gifford’s new cut is the perfect example. This covers forehead wrinkles and gives you a nice youthful appearance.

* Wear heels.

* On the subject of hair – avoid a middle part with too-long hair, cover your gray and get subtle highlights to frame your face. Charla believes that the blonder, the better and does not care for a solid block of hair color.

* Brows – sculpt your brows. I highly agree with this one. Professionally sculpted brows can take years off of your face.

* Makeup – lighten it up (amen, sista!). Ditch the dark lipstick as you get older. Same with heavy foundation and eye liner. Lighter is younger.

* A few that you might not know - eyeglasses-if you’re wearing half-glasses, then you should ditch those for hip and lighter-colored frames. Charla is also a hater of the eyeglass chain around the neck. Also, over-whitened teeth can age you, as well as keeping your nails too long.

* A couple of no-brainers in the bunch? Mom jeans (duh), obvious lip liner and a bra that doesn’t fit (if the girls aren’t perky, push ups were there to help you fake it) all make you look old.

The Style Boss' Picks for the best in Waterproof Mascara. I've tried about every waterproof under the sun because it's the only kind that I wear. I'll skip a lenghty rundown and give you my favorite in department and drugstore brands.

Maybelline XXL Volume + Length Waterproof Microfiber Mascara - The insanely long names always leaves me forgetful when asked for a great budget mascara, but I always remember the blue and white tube with a duel-end applicator. For best results, I highly recommend applying one directly after the other without waiting for the white gunk to dry. Insanely long name equals insanely long lashes.

If you happen to be Daddy Warbucks or have him for your daddy or sugar daddy, then splurge on Doirshow Waterproof. The fluffy brush equates to long, fat lashes. This is easy to remove with a simple eye makeup remover. (Part of your nightly routine, right?)

A new doozie that came across my doorstep is Blinc Kiss Me Mascara. This tube technology mascara has water-resistant "tubes" that form around your lashes that are to be removed with lots of warm water and gentle pressure. This mascara made my lashes look sparse and the "gentle pressure" needed more of an abrasive rubbing action.

I also cannot claim to being a fan of the cult classic, Maybelline Great Lash Mascara. Even the waterproof version clumps my lashes and is entirely too wet for my taste. I'll never understand the beauty industries undying love for this product. I chalk it up to the cutsie color combination.

Beatuy Bar Opens in Brooklyn

A- Although Wellies are adorable, there more well-suited for a puddle jumping than a business meeting. Since you live in the city, you'll want something comfortable, so I'd recommend the new Tory Burch Jelly Reva. Unlike the typical Tory, they're not leather, so they won't get ruined in the rain, plus, they're under $100 (with free shipping) and come in punchy spring colors that are perfect for rainy season. On the bargain end of the spectrum and also a perfectly waterproof option, you can opt for the newly styled Crocs that are also in a slip-on flat (this on in a more sling-back style) for a mere $30.

Both of these options will solve your problem and will come with a lot less bulk to boot (no pun intended).

I hit up the Urban Outfitters in Soho today for some major deals. There's plenty of summer stock and accessories galore. The online store is having a few decent sales, but they're never as good as what you can find inside. Warning - be prepared to dig.

I left with a slip skirt and some adorable earrings for $4.99 each. Also, a beaded vest, pleat-y pants, a simple tank and a pair of feather barrettes for $9.99 each! I didn't leave with that, "I just bought this because it was on sale" feeling either, so I might just go back for seconds tomorrow.

It’s high time that the one-piece has made a comeback. Here are The Style Boss’ choices for the best of 2009.

For the Small Busted- The added fabric at the top of this bandeau from J. Crew will appear to make the bust larger. This is one of my favorite suits of all time.

This suit is a great alternative and has more color options.

Asymmetrical Trend- This gorgeous suit from Anthropologie has intricate detailing and is the best of the asymmetrical trend that we’re seeing everywhere this year.

Retro- This fabulous bandeau from Target is retro-inspired and the feminine detailing does wonders for the waist-line. The rich red is gorgeous and the price cannot be beat.

The Style Boss' Picks for the Best Face Washes

Kinerase Gentle Daily Cleanser-Overall favorite and great for any skin type, especially sensitive skin. Fine for am and pm and is non-drying. I only use 1 pump so it will last forever.

Cetaphil-There are 2 types of Cetaphil Face Washes that I have and use on my face (also recommend to me by my trusty dermatologist). One is the Gentle Skin Cleanser. This one is great for dry skin and I use this in the winter. The caveat is that it's not good at taking off makeup. The other Cetaphil Face wash that I use is the Daily Facial Cleanser for Normal to Oily Skin (much better at makeup removal). I switch it up and use it in the summer when my skin tends to be more oily. Cetaphil has a great website that will customize each product for your skin.

Neutrogena Healthy Skin Visibly Even Foaming Cleanser-For Gentle Exfoliation. This exfoliating cleanser contains Vitamin C and soy. Even sensitive skin could be exfoliating a couple of times a week. This makes your skin nice and soft.

Tip- If you’re not set on using one cleanser for each wash, you can switch it up for night and day. Be sure that you’re using your heavy-duty stuff in the evening (thanks to makeup, pollution etc). Your face should still be fairly clean in the morning and should only need a gentle wash.

American Apparel Unisex Circle Scarf- I love this idea and although it’s branded as a scarf, it’s really so much more. It's a nice look when it's doubled or in a wrap and I’m all over the layer-y scarf look-plus, this one is cotton, so you can wear it throughout the summer. When I began to experiment with other creations, it was a bit awkward and I highly recommend watching the video that American Apparel provides here (same link in post). Be sure to have a skinny belt on hand. My favorites were a one-shoulder dress (love!) and the strapless mini was pretty cute too. It's not too difficult to justify this purchase because $28 gets you a whole lotta looks.

I don't have a photo of your dress, but providing that it's not really short-it's appropiate. Strapless is a classic and beautiful neckline and emerald green (as opposed to something like hot pink) makes it more sophisticated and chaperon-y enough. My suggestion is to bring a wrap and if you get to be a bit self-conscience then you can just throw that around your shoulders. Have a blast!

Today Forever 21 launched their line of plus-sized clothing, Faith 21, that is available in select stores and online. True to F21 nature, the fashion is affordable, disposable and trendy. This pencil skirt is nice and looks much hot on a curvy figure. The average woman is a size 14, so this company knows where to put their money. Let's hope others follow suit.

Bronzer Buzz

I was recently given this Bourjois de Poudre Bronzer Powder to try. After a good testing, I can say that it's a decent bronzer. Little gold flecks and a chocolaty scent surely help to make this one of their best selling products. I did find that it was less natural than some of my favorite bronzers, but the light coverage was nice. Achieving that natural, sun-kissed look is so difficult and only the best bronzers can do just that. Although this Bourjois bronzer won't break your bank, you can get nearly the same product found in Wet n' Wild for a fraction of the price.

Best Bronzer? Nars (Laguna is my favorite). Looks fabulous and does exactly what a bronzer should do. No orangy-ness and achieves that "Did you just get back from vacay?" look. This duo bronzer/blush duo here is almost as good as Kenny and Dolly. My only problem with Nars that that their packing sucks if it's not treated with kid gloves then you run the risk of your perfect bronzer or orgasmic blush being in a million little pieces. Obviously, it's worth it.

Remove Eye Makeup with an oil-based product at night before washing your face. This moisturizes your lashes and the area around the eye while removing cosmetics. I prefer any version of olive oil to do the best job. Buy an inexpensive brand for this purpose only and remove with a cotton ball.

Summer Scarf

The Summer Scarf - your must-have accessory. Warm weather is no reason to do away with one of my favorite accessories - the scarf. What you should do is change-up the material from your wool pashminas to lightweight cotton. My favorite can be found at Madewell (J. Crew's new-ish sister store) for around $30-$40. These are majorly oversized, so they wrap around in all sorts of ways to give your outfit added personality and is much needed for the inevitable blast of air conditioning that you always blasting during the warm weather months.

Top Shop is open in NYC! I work only a few doors down and have been in a few times to brave the masses. The multi-level store is filled with London-based fashions from shoes, accessories, menswear, and the Kate Moss’s signature line. I bought an adorable jumper that was not the most well-constructed for the $80 price tag, but the fun design and novelty of the newly opened store got the best of me. The line around the block for the first two weeks showed that the recession has not stopped die-hard shoppers in the city.

Philosophy Old-Fashioned Lemonade Moisturizing Hand Cream sits begging for me on my co-worker's desk...luckily she's a dear friend and very generous with her hand cream. I can't give the most proper review because I don't actually own this product, but I've fallen in love with the incredibly fresh scent and non-greasy-yet-utterly-moisturizing formula for the hands. It would probably be a bit overpowering for the entire body, but if lemon is your thing, then more power to ya.

Who Wears the Pants?

BCBG Skinny Maria Trouser - These pants have been selling at BCBG for almost 2 years. They look nice on everyone (even a not-so-skinny model, like myself) and will be a classic addition in your wardrobe. Pair with a turtleneck and pearls for the Audrey look or a funky tunic and wedges for boho fabulous. I would have never have given these bland pants a second-glance, but was talked into trying them on by a favorite sales associate and they’re now a wardrobe staple.

Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler - Boss Boss Must-Have. Not to be bossy, but if you don’t curl you eyelashes, you should learn to do it now (practice makes perfect). The difference will astonish you. If you’re not using a Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler, then run out (or log on) to Sephora and be assured it’s the best $20 you’ve spent on a beauty accessory.

This eyelash curler has special ergonomic handles for perfect control and a special “mushroom” shape to reach each and every lash. The result is a perfectly curled and never “L-shaped” lash that many of the other curlers can produce. Long and lush lashes are created each and every time. The only downside is the curer’s hinges lose life and the entire product is recommended to be replaced after 6 months. Mine last at least 9.

von Natur Facial Toner Pads

von nature facial toner pads are great for removing cleanser residue and any leftover makeup on the skin. Although toners should be used on a daily basis (ideally, in the evening), they’re often too harsh on the skin. This brand is extremely gentle and can be used around the eye area, as well. The $16 price tag is a bit steep, but for the clean cucumber scent, as opposed to the typical alcohol smell-it’s worth it.

Play Sticks from Benefit

Play Sticks from Benefit- This is one of my latest beauty finds. I don’t wear concealer on a daily basis, but every now an again-when I don’t get the right amount of sleep, my under-eye area suffers in a bad way. These Play Sticks from Benefit are designed to be a foundation and concealer all in one (too oily and much too thick for foundation, in my opinion.) What makes this concealer superior is the rich (but, not heavy) consistency that blends well and still provides coverage. (Dry concealer only enhances fine lines.)

Tip: Avoid a mistake that so many people make my buying a color that is too light for underneath the eye area. Again, this only emphasizes the problem. One-half to a shade lighter will do the trick.

Earnest Sewn is having an online sale and there are a ton of great options for men and women at $99 (normally over $200). Earnest Sewn are my absolute favorite jeans. They fit and wear remarkably well, thanks to their hand-sewn and individual construction. My Ezra's have been worn, for what I would estimate to be over 200 wears, and they look like the day that I bought them (only are a bit more worn-in). One of my favorite qualities of the jean is that I can wear them over and over (wash your jeans as little as possible) and they never lose their fit or stretch. I just ordered the Harlan's in the darker wash. If you know the fit, leave a review below.

Local NYC Tip- If you have the chance to visit one of the actual stores in Manhattan, don’t hesitate. The rugged aesthetics alone are worth a trip in, but the customer service is phenomenal. I gave the LES store a call today and confirmed that the sale was online only.

Ojon Rub-Out Dry Cleanser

Ojon Rub-Out Dry Cleanser is my newest obsession. I’ve now learned that hair powder or dry shampoo-when used properly-can double as a styling product. Not only is dry shampoo great for extending wash time, but because fine hair (like mine) is often over-treated with products that weigh down the hair, only to make it more limp and lifeless. My new solution? Ojon Rub-Out Dry Cleanser. After I’ve blown my hair dry, I spray the entire head with a fine mist and my mane instantly looks incredibly thicker. My hair dresser confirmed my new find and encouraged me to try a less expensive version. I have no qualms with that, as the smell of Ojon is slightly overpowering. I’ll be sampling a new alternative to a hair powder soon so stay tuned for the review.

Wearing sling backs or peep-toes with tights is a great way to stretch your shoe budget. When you shop for shoes from now on, buy ones that will work well both bare-legged and under tights, so that you’ll get the most for your money. This is also a great way to incorporate the tights-under-shorts look that is so hot right now and perfect for transitioning seasonal clothing. Just remember-no pantyhose!

Hylexin for Serious Dark Circles Under the Eyes - This is known to be one of the most popular products for severely dark circles. I happen to be the poster girl for this unfortunate case, so I couldn’t wait to jump on the Hylexin bandwagon. Unfortunately, I didn’t get results with this product. There seemed to be no difference in my under-eye appearance in either an immediate, short-term case or over a long period of time (3 months +). Either way-not worth the $100 price tag. I’ll be searching for a better product.

Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer SPF 30 - This was recommended to me by my dermatologist, so you know it's legit. With UVA/UVB and SPF 30, you're getting great sun protection. The product boast the natural benefits of soy to even out the skin tone and reveal the skin’s radiance. I’m not sure if my skin is more radiant after approximately 6 months of use, but I like the heavy moisturizing action with oil free goodness (no breakouts). Drugstore brand means the price is right too. This has been my go-to moisturizer for the last year. Another bonus is that it doesn’t have that sunscreen-y smell that many moisturizers with higher SPF numbers have. Pair this with SkinCeuticals Serum (not so budget-friendly) and you’re set.

SkinCeuticals Serum. Boss Buy Must-Have. This might be my #1 beauty product. It gives your skin that glow-y look and a reason to buy a less expensive moisturizer. The price can range from about $80-$150 for a small bottle of the serum, but a little goes a long way. A few tips that I’ve learned from other beauty gurus are to keep this out of the light (my friend Candice actually applies it in the dark for fear of tainting the liquid gold) and my fellow beauty editor pal, Courtney’s,rubs 4 drops gently on into skin and then a 5th under your eyes and on any sun spots. I’m not kidding when I say that people are devoted to this product.

Local NYC tip: Buy this product at Haven in Soho for customized care. Their trained esthetician are incredible about finding the best serum for your skin and one that best suits your budget, as well.
